TABLE RUNNER
Cutting:
For (3) 15" blocks:
A - black #637
(6) 6" squares → Subcut diagonally to create 12 Large triangles
(3) 4" squares
B - white #641
(9) 6 ¼" squares - Subcut both diagonals to create 36 triangles.
C - red #638
(3) 6 ¼" squares - Subcut on both diagonals to create 12 Small triangles
(6) 6" squares - Subcut diagonally to create 12 Large triangles
(6) 3 ¼" squares - Subcut diagonally to create 12 Medium triangles.
Binding – black #637
(3) 3 ¼” x Width of Fabric strips, sewn together
Note: Press all seams open unless otherwise stated. Use ¼” seam allowance on all seams.
Instructions:
1. Sew the black 4” block together with red small triangles as per the diagram. Press the seams open as you sew each piece together. You will make three of the same block.
2. Sew together the white triangles with the block from Step 1. Repeat to create three of the same block.
3. Sew together red large triangles to the block from Step 2. Repeat to create three of the same block.
4. Sew together two white triangles with one red small triangle as per diagram. Make (12) pieces total.
5. Use four pieces from Step 4 and sew them together with the blocks from Step 3. Using the remaining pieces from Step 4, repeat Step 5 to create three of the same block.
6. Sew together black large triangles to the block from Step 5. Square up blocks to 15".
7. Sew all three blocks together to create your table runner.
8. To quilt your piece, take the pieced table runner top you just created and place the batting in between the top and your backing fabric. (The backing will be larger than the top; save the scraps for another project.) You will have a 3-layered “sandwich” with the table runner, batting, and backing. Quilting can be done on your domestic machine by pinning pieces together and sewing lines along the front of the table runner (see the coasters section for more instructions). Alternatively, you could use a longarm to quilt all your pieces together.
9. Binding your project finishes the table runner. There are several different ways to bind your quilted table runner (see the coasters section for more instructions).
COASTERS (Optional)
Cutting:
For (4) Coasters:
white #643 - (4) 5" (12.7cm) squares
red #640 - (16) 2 ½" (6.35cm) squares
Backing - white #643 - (4) 6" (12.7cm) squares
Batting - scraps - (4) 5” squares
Binding - black #637 - (2) 3 ¼” x width of fabric strips, sewn together
Instructions:
For Each Coaster:
1. a) Make a diagonal line on the back of (4) red 2 ½" squares. Sew on the diagonal line, each red 2 ½” square to 5” square, right sides together. Cut excess fabric to leave a ¼” seam. Press open. Repeat for all four corners to create your diamond block. Create (4) blocks.
1. b) Alternative detail instructions: Along the diagonal line, sew one 2 ½” square to 5” square, cut excess fabric to leave ¼” seam, press open. Repeat for all four corners.
2. Using scrap batting and backing fabric, create a quilt "sandwich". Create a 3-layered “sandwich” with the coaster, batting, and backing. Pin all the layers together. Top stitch/quilt the layers together.
2. Square up to 5”. Now you are ready for binding.
3. Binding - take 3 ¼” strips and iron lengthwise in half to create your binding. Using a marking tool, mark 1/3 sections on one side of the binding, making sure the fold is on the left-hand side.
4. With the fold on the left, sew binding just to the right side of your first marking, to the outer edge of the 5” coaster.
5. Sew up to ½” inch of the edge of your coaster and then ¼ turn your piece to sew into the corner of the coaster.
6. Fold over the binding towards the right-hand side. Then, fold over the binding towards the left to have it lined up with the next side of your coaster.
7. Sew along the next edge of the coaster. Repeat these steps until the whole coaster has binding attached. Fold over the edge of the beginning of the binding to hide the raw edge of the binding.
8. Your back binding is now complete on the back of your coaster. For the front, turn the binding over to the other side of the coaster and pin/clip in place to finish the front binding.
9. Sew the front binding in place.
And you're finished! Enjoy your coasters!
