This quick and easy beginner project is the perfect gift for family and friends. Make it as a hostess gift, teachers’ gift, holiday decoration, bag or gift embellishment. Set your imagination free and create as many combinations as you can dream up!

The ornament shown here is made from a 5” charm pack, buy or make your own 5” charms. (Size of finished ornament will vary based on the size of the fabric squares used to make it.)

Materials needed:

(16) 5” fabric charms or squares in any color assortment
(2) 5” fabric charms or squares for the center “pillow” (not seen)
14” of ribbon or decorative thread used to hang the ornament
Buttons, beads, baubles, fabric yo-yo’s, etc. for the center of the ornament (one on each side)
Fiberfill
Needle-Strong and longer size
Thread-Strong or doubled
Iron
Iron mat or board
Pinking Shears-optional
Plyers-optional

Begin by gathering your 5” charm pack (s). In this instance Kaffe Fassett charm packs are used.

Select your 5” charms in the selected colors to make your ornament.

To begin making your prairie points fold the 5” charm on point to create a large triangle shape as shown below. Press fold with iron.
Fold the large triangle again into a smaller triangle as shown below. Press new fold with iron. (Picture 2)

Continue making (15 or more) prairie points.

Arrange the finished prairie points into groupings or arrangements of your liking.

To make the “pillow” (not seen in finished ornament) use (2) 5” charms or scrap fabric to make a 4 ½” circle. The pillow circle must be a half inch smaller than the squares used to make the ornament. Use a compass, or circular lid to trace. Sew by hand or machine (2) circles together along drawn line. With pinking shears or straight cut scissors trim the edges.

Cut an X in ONE of the pillow sides being careful not to cut through both layers to the second one. Try not to make this cut in the center of the pillow but off to the side as shown below. This will be the hole used to turn and stuff the pillow. Turn the pillow right side out.

Stuff the pillow through the hole created and stitch closed by hand.

Begin to sew the prairie points onto the pillow. Center one end of prairie point in the center of the pillow, pull needle and thread through this end straight through the pillow to the other side. Roll the prairie point around the pillow onto the other side center and catch this other end with the needle and thread. Continue sewing the additional prairie points onto the pillow. They can be sewn one by one or in groups of two or three, your choice. Be sure to use a strong, long needle with heavier weight thread. As you sew the prairie points onto the pillow it will become harder to pull the needle through all the thickness you may need plyers to pull the needle through all layers.

Finish your ornament by attaching a 14” ribbon or decorative thread to hang the ornament and a decorative center to finish off the raw edges in the center.
