Sew A Summer Kaftan

There's just a little bit of summer left. Look chic by the poolside with this cute and easy Kaftan!

Skills Learned: Straight stitch, hemming, trim (optional)

Skill Level: confident beginner

Finished Size: one size

Fabric Requirements: 

  • 2 yards (2.83m) of 1937-66 Green - Shell Stitch
  • (Optional) 4 yards (3.66m) fringe or trim on the bottom

Cutting:

  1. Cut down the middle to create 59"x72" rectangle. Set aside one half for another kaftan or other project.

  1. Fold in half, at 59" across and 36" down.  Cut down the middle to create 2 pieces, 29.5"x36".

Instructions: 

  1. Sew pieces, right sides together, at front and back, leaving 10" open for the neckline (total 20" with front and back openings together).Press back the neck hem to 1/4"-3/8" and sew the frayed edges closed on the neckline.

  1. Open up rectangle and serge or sew sides of Kaftan in to close raw edges of fabric.

  1. Hem the bottom of Kaftan front and back. (Optional step - add trim to the bottom of the Kaftan).
  2. Sew in 10" from the edges on both sides, up to the 20" mark.

  1. That's all, your Summer Kaftan is ready!

I used a pom pom trim for my kaftan.
