Inspirations of Victoria Hutto Designer for Studio E Fabrics

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Victoria Hutto, and like many artists, I’ve created ever since I was a child.  I was raised to believe that art was just for fun and not a good career choice. But I could not escape my desire to create. I believe it is who I am. The idea that I could create something, and bring a smile to someone’s face has always intrigued me. To make a living from creating and bringing joy to another person’s life is a special gift!

“Creating A Little Happiness.” It's what I do.

What inspires you?

I think about my life as a child. My mom taught me to sew. She told me I could not be satisfied following a sewing pattern, or that I could not find the right color fabric and pattern for my projects. Looking back on this, it must have been a clue that I would be on the path to being an artist/designer. When I started my career as an artist, my dream was to create art that could be applied to all types of products. As a licensed artist, I have been able to design greeting cards, flags, puzzles, pillows, floormats, lamps, and figurines to name a few. I often think about my childhood sewing projects, and it has always been a goal of mine to create my own fabric designs.

I love children’s illustrations. Early in my career, I had a position as a designer for the company known for Hello Kitty; Sanrio. I have a wide range of styles and subjects, but Sanrio has had a huge influence on my work. I enjoy creating loveable characters in my illustrations.

Tell us about your fabric.

It's been a wonderful experience working with Studio E!  What comes most naturally to me is creating cute characters with a little whimsy, which you can see in my latest holiday collections “Graveyard Ghouls” and “A Jolly Good Time”.  Other collections that I have designed for Studio E are Sweet Dreams, Baby Love, and Sweet Safari.  Most recently, I have been working on a collection called “Moonlit Dreams”, coming in April 2024. I lost both my sweet dogs not long ago, and I would like to think that all creatures go to heaven after they pass.  This is the inspiration behind “Moonlit Dreams”.

In M’Ocean, shipping in March 2024, I was trying a different style - a more sophisticated style. I wanted to explore texture and line work - creating a feel of movement in the sea.  It was a great exercise for me.

I want my designs to inspire others, and I am amazed by what people do with the fabric.  It is exciting to see their finished projects, and it inspires me to create more!

What advice do you have for the new maker?

My advice, in general, is never stop exploring. Listen to your “gut”.  I’ve worked in the art business for many years now, and it can sometimes be difficult to keep your work fresh.  When I get “stuck” I try other mediums, or just learn a new skill.  This often leads to a new way of working, and new perspectives.  For example, I recently started to learn how to needle felt. I love creating in 3-D, and needle felting has led me to creating my characters for “Moonlit Dreams”.  I use needle felting now to help me visualize my characters in different angles and poses for some of my patterns.  You never know what learning something new will lead to.  You just have to jump right in!
