Quilting cotton isn’t just for quilting. I find that a fun collection is perfect for creating fun home decor such as a whimsical wall hanging like the one, I’m sharing here today. Using just a couple of fabrics, a scrap of felt, and a small stick from the yard, you can make your own wall art!
Skills Learned: Applique
Skill Level: Beginner
Finished Size: 11” x 13” (27.94cm x 33.02cm)
Fabric Requirements:
Two small cuts of fabric, about a fat quarter of each. This cute collection has 14 designs to choose from, I chose:
Floral Daydream - Multi | PWCD055.XMULTI
Kitty Kitty Meow Meow - Blue | PWCD044.XBLUE
Optional: felt for adding lettering or a design
Additional Recommendations: cutting tools, acrylic ruler, coordinating thread
Cutting:
Cut background fabric to 12” x14” (30.48cm x 35.56cm)
Cut feature fabric to 7” x 7” (17.78cm x 17.78cm)
Instructions:
Place your feature fabric onto your background fabric. Using an applique stitch (or a zig zag stitch) on your machine, stitch around the perimeter of the feature fabric.
Flip over the background fabric, and on the right and left, mark a line 1/2” from the edge with a pencil.
Press raw edge to the line, and then fold again and press. You will have a double folded edge with your raw edge hidden.
Stitch in place with a 1/8” seam allowance.
Along the bottom edge, mark 3/4” from the edge with your pencil. Like you just did, fold raw edge toward the line and press, then fold and press again, so that your raw edge is totally hidden.
Stitch in place with a 1/2” seam allowance.
Finally, for the top edge, mark 1/2” from raw edge. Fold and press fabric to meet raw edge. Then, from your folded edge, mark a line 1.5”. Fold your pressed fabric toward the line you just made and press in place. Use a 5/8” seam allowance to secure. This will be used later for hanging.
Now it's time to add some lettering with felt. You can either just cut the letters or design of your choosing from your felt, or you can print a design from your computer to use as a template. I did the latter, and traced the design onto my felt prior to cutting.
Once you cut your design, place it onto your banner and slowly stitch around it with a straight stitch. You will have to keep your needle down and pivot a good deal depending on your design, but just go slow and you will get there!
Ta-dah! You are all done with your banner. Just grab a small stick or dowel and some twine, insert into the channel, and your banner is ready to adorn your wall.
Fabric can be used any way you like! Layer together lots of prints or elements from various fabrics. Make it your own and have fun with it. That is the joy of sewing!
