If you’re a mom of a little baby, you probably know the wonders of a baby carrier. This device will help you free up your hands so the baby can rest close to you while you get some other things done! This baby ring sling carrier is a great beginner-friendly sewing project, and it can be customized to show off four different prints (quilting cottons work great!).

Fabric cutting tools (scissors or rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat)
Sewing clips or pins

Make the Baby Ring Sling

  1. Cut the selvages off each of your four fabric prints. Choose two prints for the front and two prints for the back of the baby carrier.

  1. Taking the two prints for the front, place them right sides together, and stitch using a ¼” seam allowance along the sides you cut earlier. Repeat with the two prints for the back.

  1. Open up the fabrics you just joined for the front and press the seam to one side. Sew a zig-zag stitch over top of the seam to reinforce your stitches. Repeat with the back panel.

  1. Cut a 10” strip off the width of both the front and back panels. They should each measure 26” wide and 88” long.

  1. Place the panels, right sides together, and pin or clip together along the edges. Sew all around the perimeter using a ¼” seam allowance, leaving a 6” gap on one short end for turning. Be sure to backstitch at both ends.

  1. Turn the fabric right side out through the turning hole. Use your fingers to gently poke out the corners.

  1. Press the edges flat using an iron.

  1. When you reach the opening, press both raw edges toward the inside by ¼”. You’ll stitch over this in the next step!

  1. Top stitch all around the edges, including the opening from earlier, using a 1/8” seam allowance.

  1. At one of the short ends of the baby wrap, measure and mark a line 15” from the end.

  1. Slip the short end of the wrap through both rings, folding the fabric down to the 15” line you marked. Pin or clip in place.

  1. Stitch right over top of the topstitching line from earlier, sew a straight line at the 15” mark from end to end, trapping the rings in the fabric wrap. Backstitch at both ends. Sew two more lines, each ½” to 1” from the original line, to reinforce the stitches.
