If you’re looking for a baby shower gift that’s fun and easy to sew, look no further than this baby bib and burp cloth set! You can easily cut out these fabrics and sew them together in an afternoon. For the towel fabric, I’ve picked up some inexpensive white bar towels at a dollar store. An alternative would be to back the burp cloth and bib in chenille or terry cloth by the yard.

These personalized baby gifts are a great beginner sewing project, and will make a sweet gift for a new baby. Let’s get started!

Technique: Machine sewing, quilting

Skill Level: Beginner

Sew the Baby Bib

1. Print out the baby bib pattern, cut out the pieces, and tape them together where indicated. Fold the towel fabric in half, right sides together, and pin the pattern aligning the straight edge along the fold. Cut around the remaining sides of the pattern, just to the outside of the cutting line. Do not cut the straight side placed on the fold.

2. Fold the batting in half and pin the pattern on top so the straight edge is positioned on the fold. Cut around the pattern, leaving the center hole intact for now. Unfold the batting.

3. Using a ¼” seam allowance, sew the 5 print strips together on the long edges. Press the seams to one side. Center the patchwork panel on top of the batting. Stitch in the Ditch along each seam through all layers. What is Stitch in the Ditch? Stitch in the Ditch is the term used to denote the top stitching done (with the sewing machine) in the ‘ditch’ or ‘well’ formed in a seam, from the top, to catch the fabric on the back, after the seam allowance is pressed to one side. It is done to make the stitching line less noticeable on the face of a garment.

(Note: if thickness of towel fabric, batting and regular fabric is an issue, maker may want to look into either making their stitch length longer, or using a walking foot.)

4. Trim off the excess fabric from around the batting.

5. Folding the batting/fabric in half, right sides together, place the pattern on top and trim around it to make the bib top.

6. Stack the towel fabric bib backing from step 1 on top of the fabric/batting unit from Step 5, right sides together.  Pin in place and stitch ¼” around the perimeter, leaving a 3-4” opening along one side for turning.

7. Trim the seam allowance of the bib to 1/8” so it is less bulky when you turn it. Be careful not to clip your seam!

8. Turn the bib right side out through the hole. Use a pencil or the round edge of a point turner or seam creaser to gently poke out the corners. Be sure to fold in your opening seam allowance. Then, topstitch the bib 1/8” from the edge around the perimeter, closing the opening as you sew across it.

9. Sew Velcro dots or snaps (hand sewn) to the top tabs to secure the two arms of the bib.

Sew the Burp Cloth

1. Stack the towel fabric on top of the right side of the print fabric and pin in place.

2. Sew ¼” from the edge around the perimeter, leaving a 3-4” opening for turning the burp cloth right side out.

3. Use scissors or a rotary cutter to trim off the points from each corner, being careful not to trim into the seam. This creates nice, crisp corners.

4. Turn the burp cloth right side out through the opening. Use a pencil or round edge of a point turner to gently poke out the corners. Turn in the opening seam allowance, and top stitch 1/8” from the edge around the perimeter, closing the opening as you sew across it.

I hope you enjoyed this fast and easy sewing project! These burp cloths and bibs make excellent baby shower gifts and are a great way to show off cute fabric prints. Happy sewing!
