Sew your dog some stylish new accessories for walks in the park! This DIY leash, treat bag, and neck scarf make an adorable pet set. And it’s easy to sew it all yourself! Make this set as a “welcome home” gift for a new puppy in your life.

Technique: Machine sewing

Skill Level: Beginner

Finished Sizes:

• Leash: 53” long x 1” wide (134.62cm x 2.54cm)
• Treat Bag: 3 ½” x 3 ½” x 2 ½” (8.89cm x 8.89cm x 6.35cm)
• Neck Scarf: 15” long x 2 ½” wide (38.1cm x 6.35cm)

Materials:

Leash:

• 4 fat eighths quilting cotton - 9” x 22” (22.86cm x 55.88cm). I used:

• 58” x 4” (134.62cm x 10.16cm) strip of lightweight fusible interfacing
• 1 swivel hook

Note: This leash is the right size for a smaller dog, but you can add another 15” fabric strip to make it a longer leash.

Treat Bag:

• 2 fat eighths quilting cotton - 9” x 22” (22.86cm x 55.88cm). I used:

• 8” (20.32cm) or longer decorative zipper
• 3” (7.62cm) piece of 1”-wide ribbon or lace
• Small carabiner or key ring

Neck Scarf:

• 2 fat eighths quilting cotton - 9” x 22” (22.86cm x 55.88cm). I used:

• Velcro, button, or hook-and-eye closure of your choice

Equipment needed:
Sewing machine
Iron
Fabric cutting tools (scissors or rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat)
Sewing clips or pins

Instructions:

Make the Leash

1. Cut four different 15” x 4” rectangles and sew them together end-to-end to make one long strip. Press a 58” x 4” strip of lightweight fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the pieced strip.

2. Press the strip in half along the width. Unfold and refold both long sides in toward the center fold. Press.

3. Fold the long strip again in half trapping the raw edges inside to make a four-fold strap. Clip together along the edges and stitch 1/8” from each long edge.

4. Stitch over the raw edges of both short ends using a zig-zag stitch to close them. At this time you can stitch a series of long, straight lines through the leash to give it a quilted look!

5. Loop one short end of the quilted leash through the swivel hook, and fold over on top of itself by 1”. Clip in place and stitch through all layers with a zig-zag stitch.

6. Make a 6½” loop at the other end of the leash to make the handle. You may use a zig-zag stitch like you did earlier, or fold the raw edge under by ½” and stitch a box with an “X” through it to secure the loop in place.

7. Your leash is complete! This leash is the right size for a smaller dog, but you can add another 15” fabric strip to make it a longer leash.

Make the Treat Bag

1. Cut two 12” x 7” rectangles of fabric (I used two coordinating prints). Place them right sides together and stitch ¼” from the edge on the 12” long sides only.

2. Turn the fabric tube right side out and rotate it so the seam is in the center of the tube and both prints are showing. Press.

3. Fold both short ends together in the center of the fabric tube and press.

4. Zig zag stitch along the open ends of the tube.

5. Unzip the decorative zipper and lay the right side on top of the right stitched edge of the fabric. Pin in place and stitch as close as you can to the teeth by using your zipper foot. Note: The decorative zipper sits on top of the raw edges and is meant to be seen!

6. With the zipper pull out of the way, line up the decorative zipper and clip the left side in place on top of the left side of the fabric. Again, stitch in place as close as you can to the teeth by using your zipper foot.

7. Pull the zipper tab up to close the zipper. Trim off the excess zipper tail with a pair of scissors so it lines up with the edge of the fabric.

8. Turn the zipper pouch wrong side out. With the zipper centered on the pouch, clip and stitch one open end of the pouch using a ¼” seam.

9. Cut a 3” strip of ribbon (or lace) for the hanging loop. Fold it in half to make a loop. Clip the loop to the interior of the pouch (the open end) near the zipper. Stitch the open end of the pouch closed using a ¼” seam.

10. Cut a 1” square from each corner of the flat pouch as pictured.

11. Open each cut corner and pinch the sides together to make boxy corners. Clip the corners in place and stitch ¼” seam along each corner. Zig-zag stitch the raw edges to reinforce the seams.

12. Turn the treat bag right side out and close the zipper. Add a carabiner to the loop and clip it to your leash, filled with doggie treats!

Make the Neck Scarf

1. Cut two 15 ½” x 3” fabric rectangles. Place them right sides together and stitch around the perimeter using a ¼” seam allowance and leaving a 2” gap for turning on one long side.

2. Clip off each of the corners, being careful not to cut into the seam. Turn right side out. Press.

3. Topstitch around the neck scarf, sewing 1/8” all around the perimeter, making sure to close the turning gap as you go.

4. Fit the collar around your pet’s neck and add Velcro, a snap, hook-and-eye, button, or the closure method of your choice!
