I currently work as a Cath Lab nurse. As a healthcare provider, I like to wear different scrub hats to represent my style. If you're in healthcare or work somewhere where you wear scrub hats, I think you'll love this DIY project!
Technique: Straight stitch, hemming, trim (optional)
Skill Level: confident beginner
Finished Size: one size
Fabric Requirements:
Vibrant Botanica collection by Kitty McCall
1/2yd (.46m) of your favorite print. I used: #PWKC008 Big Daisies
Other requirements:
5" - 1/4" elastic
1yd - color coordinated ribbon
2 1/2"x8 1/2" - flannel or sweatband fabric
Scissors
Pins
Rotary Cutter
Thread
Pen or pencil
Sewing machine

Recommendations:
*Use one of your own scrub hats to create the pattern/size of scrub hat you need. As an example, I have a disposable hat and a purchased hat in the photo below to use as patterns.

*You can also look online; there are several people that offer free or paid scrub hat patterns. Again, these are just ideas because, in the end, you will need to adjust per person on what size you need.
Cutting:
23" x 12" - sides of hat
13 1/2" x 8" - top of hat
5" x 10" - ponytail/bun section of hat
2 - 18" strips of ribbon
2 1/2"x8 1/2" - flannel/sweatband fabric
5 1/2" - 1/4" elastic

Optional:
2 - buttons - for mask holders
Instructions:
(Watch the video tutorial here)
1. Fold the 23" x 12" piece in half lengthwise and half again widthwise (in the opposite direction). Your piece will be 11.5" x 6". Then, cut a curved line at 4" at the top and 6" at the bottom, as shown in the diagram. This will be the "sides" of the hat.

2. Fold the 13 1/2" x 8" piece in half lengthwise. Cut a curved line at the top right corner and a curved line from the middle of the fabric to the bottom left corner, as shown in the diagram. This will be the "top" of the hat.

3. Mark the center front of the "sides" of the hat fabric and place the sweat band fabric centered with a quarter inch tucked in. Pin sweatband in place with 1/4" inches seams tucked in all around the sweatband. Open up the side piece and sew the sweatband in place. Fold the "sides" piece back in half, the sweatband will be on the inside of the scrub hat.

4. Sew the 5" x 10" "ponytail" fabric to one side of the sides fabric at ⅜”-½” seam allowance. There will be 1" of fabric that sticks out on the ponytail fabric, this is to install the elastic.

5. Sew in the ribbon end as shown.

6. Fold ribbon at a 45° -degree angle and pin in place. Also pin in place 1/4" elastic, as shown, and fold in the edge of the "ponytail" fabric, 1/2" over 1/2", as shown, and pin in place. Sew together elastic, ribbon and folded fabric from the "ponytail" section.

7. Repeat steps 4-6 to the other side of the hat.

8. Sew down the remainder of the "ponytail" fabric at 1/8" seam allowance, taking care not to sew on the elastic.

9. Pin and sew in place at ⅜”-½” seam allowance, the "top" of the hat to the "sides" of the hat, right sides together.

10. Now, try on your DIY scrub hat! That's it!
Scrub hats are definitely fit to each person, so don't hesitate to alter this pattern to what you need. For any questions or comments, please connect with me!
