Designing with Joy: Inside The Whimsical World of Heidi Pridemore

As the founder and lead designer of The Whimsical Workshop, I’ve spent over two decades creating bright, playful quilt designs that bring joy to makers of all levels. Our company was founded in 2005 after I launched my own line of quilt patterns in 2002, building on my earlier career as a product designer for craft companies. Since then, The Whimsical Workshop has grown into a vibrant hub for creative inspiration, known for colorful designs and easy-to-follow patterns.

At The Whimsical Workshop, my husband and I design hundreds of quilt patterns each year, along with hand embroidery and punch needle patterns. We collaborate closely with national fabric companies—including Blank Quilting, Henry Glass and Studio E—to create fabric collections, project sheets, and tutorials that celebrate color, whimsy, and imagination. As both an Aurifilosopher and BERNINA Ambassador, I love teaching others how to incorporate thread and texture into their projects in creative ways.

I’m especially passionate about using batiks, which I now design myself. I’m constantly inspired by the fabric collections we receive and love to create quilts that are either bold and geometric or delightfully whimsical. Whether I’m working on a new design or filming a tutorial for our YouTube channel, my goal is always the same: to spark creativity and make quilting approachable and fun.

Our YouTube channel, The Whimsical Workshop, is packed with tutorials, technique breakdowns, product spotlights, and behind-the-scenes peeks into our latest projects. It’s a great space for quilters to learn, laugh, and stay inspired. I’ve also recently launched a podcast called Stitching Up Trouble in partnership with fellow quilter and retreat owner Mary Sowatzka. In each episode, we dive into all things quilting—from the creative process and industry trends to what it’s like owning a retreat center and navigating life as full-time quilt designers.

Through our website, www.TheWhimsicalWorkshop.com, we offer a wide range of quilt patterns, fabric kits, books, and exclusive designs, along with resources for quilters and crafters of all skill levels. I also travel across the country and on cruises teaching workshops, leading lectures, and connecting with fellow makers who share a love for fabric and color.

For the SIY - Sew It Yourself (SIY) community, I’ve contributed fun, approachable projects like the Strawberry Throw Pillows (coming soon!), the Stand Tall Tote, and the Organize It Basket. These small projects are perfect for learning a new skill and finishing something quickly—two things I always encourage for anyone trying to grow their confidence in sewing.
