Shop Spotlight: Artistic Quilts with Colors

By Lindsay Conner

Located in Belleville, Ontario (just north of Prince Edward County), there’s a lovely quilt shop that has created a community around a love of fabrics and creativity. Artistic Quilts with Colors, owned by Jinni Beens is founded on the idea that quilting is more than just an art—it’s a community. Indeed, customers describe shopping here as a “kid in a candy store” experience. The excitement of exploring the array of fabrics, patterns, and notions is unmatched.

When the previous owner decided to sell this beloved local quilt shop, Jinni saw the perfect opportunity to weave her creativity and sense of community into the neighborhood. With a deep love for quilting and a desire to connect with fellow enthusiasts, Jinni transformed the shop into a space where friends can create, together.

Artistic Quilts with Colors stands apart from other shops in its modern fabrics and curated collections. Their customer base ranges from advanced sewists to complete beginners, who they welcome with open arms! “We believe quilting should be accessible to everyone, no matter their skill level,” says Jinni. “To support new quilters, we offer beginner-friendly classes and workshops designed to teach the fundamentals. With hands-on instruction and personalized guidance, we make sure that even those new to sewing can start their journey with ease.” Their welcoming community provides a supportive environment where newcomers can learn, ask questions, and grow their skills. Plus, their curated selection of fabrics and starter kits makes it easy for beginners to dive into their first projects with confidence.

One thing that makes Artistic Quilts with Colors unique is its active and engaged sewing community. “We host spring and fall retreats where customers, friends, and newcomers can come together to sew or finish their projects,” Jinni says. “These two-day retreats are filled with laughter, shared techniques, helpful suggestions, and plenty of opportunities to grow.” Additionally, they’ve recently added a fleet of sewing machines to the in-shop classroom, ensuring that even those without their own equipment can fully participate and enjoy the learning experience.

They are also in the process of starting a small group dedicated to sewing twin-size quilts for local shelters. This willingness to support the charitable work is felt by the surrounding community—including local quilting guilds who can receive donated materials needed to complete charity projects. “To further grow our sense of community, we have open sew dates every day that we are open to the public and not running a class,” Jinni adds. “This allows anyone to drop in, work on their projects, and enjoy the company of fellow quilters!”

From beginner quilting classes to advanced retreats for paper piecing, Artistic Quilts with Colors has something for everyone. “Our Mastery BERNINA machine classes help you get the most out of your sewing machine, while our workshops on bag making, toy making, embroidery, binding, accessories, and applique provide endless creative possibilities,” Jinni says. “We also stock advanced tools and accessories tailored to experienced quilters.”

One of their standout offerings is the SIY-Sew It Yourself (SIY) program, where customers can dive into hands-on projects and learn by doing. “Customers particularly love this program because it allows them to walk away with a beautiful piece they've created themselves, along with a profound sense of accomplishment. Whether you're just starting or looking to master a new technique, our classes provide the skills, inspiration, and community support to help you succeed.”

When asked what crafts they see people gravitating towards right now, Jinni says it is a trend towards applique and toy making. “Customers are particularly excited about applique techniques, which allow them to add intricate, personalized designs to their quilts and other projects,” she says. “Additionally, toy making has become increasingly popular, with many customers eager to create charming, handmade toys that make thoughtful gifts or special keepsakes.”

Above all else, there’s a sense of genuine camaraderie and shared passion for creativity that creatives bring to this shop environment. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see how our customers support and inspire one another, whether they're seasoned quilters or just starting out,” Jinni says. “Whether it's browsing our unique textiles, participating in a lively class, or joining one of our engaging retreats, the joy and creativity that fills our store makes every visit a delightful adventure!”
