Jazzy Pouch

Featuring: Blank Quilting Corp. All That Jazz by Hannah of Pencil & Ink Studios

Sewn by: Shankari Paradee, Sewl Sister

This is a very simple intermediate project that gives you the opportunity to try out new fabrics, use up scraps, and create a useable art piece in your home. Pouches are for storage of any kind and your beautiful work will be displayed for everyone to admire.  I created this project to use the All That Jazz collection and I love how the fabric colors all compliment each other.

Skills Learned: Rotary cutting, Straight stich, Top stitch

Skill Level: Intermediate – requires installation of a zipper

Finished Size: approximately 9.5”x6.5” (24.13cm x 16.51cm) pouch

Fabric Requirements:

All That Jazz Collection by Hannah of Pencil & Ink Studios.

2" (5.08cm) x WOF strips of fabric and then cut down to size - 10.5" x 14". I used the following SKUs:

2275-01 White

2277-99 Black

2278-99 Black

2280-99 Black

2281-01 White

2281-99 Black

2276-01 White

Additional Requirements:

11" x 15" (27.94cm x 38.1cm) coordinating fabric
11" x 15" (27.94cm x 38.1cm) scrap batting
9.5" (24.13cm) zipper

Cutting:

Cut 2½” x WOF strips from each fabric or 2½” squares from each fabric in the collection, depending on what suits your style and color preference.

Instructions:

  • Sew strips or squares together using a 1/4" seam to create an 10.5" x 14" rectangle. You can put together any variation of fabrics to create a scrappy look. Press your rectangle.
  • Layer pieced fabric onto batting and coordinating fabric to create a mini quilt sandwich.
  • Quilt your piece together in any way you would like. Straight line quilting is a great technique to practice here. Straight Line Quilting is a series of straight lines, stitched across the surface of the quilt. The lines can be parallel to the edge of the quilt for vertical or horizontal lines, or sewn on the diagonal, usually at a 45 or 60 degree angle, sometimes creating a grid pattern across the quilt.
  • Square up your mini quilt to 10.5" x 14".
  • Attach your zipper to your pouch. Place the zipper with the right side facing the opening of the pouch’s right side. Pin in place matching the edge of the top of your pouch with the zipper tape. Sew a 1/4″ seam to secure the zipper and move the zipper toggle as you sew.  Repeat on the other side of the pouch.

Note: The zipper is longer than the width of the pouch. It is okay because you will catch the zipper and the zipper teeth in the side seam of your pouch.  This will secure the end of the zipper.

  • With right sides together, fold in half, matching side seams. Sew sides of your pouch closed using a 1/2" seam.
  • Cut out 1.5" squares from bottom corners of the pouch sections as shown.
  • Open up the sections and sew 1/2" seam to close corners of your pouch. This will create the base of your pouch.
  • Turn pouch inside out. Top stitch around your zipper. Your pouch is ready to use!

Now you have a beautiful pouch to hold all your sewing notions or other items, featuring All That Jazz fabric!

I hope you enjoyed this easy-to-follow tutorial!
