As summer ends and the weather gets cooler, I think of cozy décor for Thanksgiving. Table runners and napkins are easy to sew and can add just the right touch for any setting. The contrasting band on our table runner is easier than it looks (hint: it’s reversible!) and coordinating rather than matching napkins give and elevated look to your tablescape. For an added touch, personalize the napkin ties with hand or machine embroidery.

Of course, the Harvest Hill Collection by Kim Diehl ticks all the boxes and is the perfect fabric for this project. The lush colors and homey prints blend perfectly with all things fall! Happy sewing!

Table Runner

  • Measure along the long edge of fabric B and mark a point 3" from each end on the right side of the fabric. Repeat along the remaining long edge.
  • Pin fabric with right sides together along the long edges. Match the ends of fabric A with the marked points. Stitch with a ½” seam allowance.
  • Turn fabric right side out press so there are band of equal with along each long edge.
  • Turn under and press ½” along each raw end. Fold ends toward the front of the runner overlapping the ends of fabric A by ½”. Press and pin in place.
  • Fold ends in diagonally to miter the corners (see Napkins steps 1-3 for details on mitering corners). Pin.
  • Topstitch in place along all edges close to the inside folds and seam lines.

Napkins

  • Turn under and press a ½” double fold hem along all edges of each napkin.
  • Open out each edge completely, Turn the corner in diagonally and press. The corner folds (shown in green) with align with the inner fold line (shown in blue) even with the inner fold line.
  • Refold the edges to create a mitered corner. Repeat with remaining corners and topstitch the hem in place close to the fold.

Ties

  • Fold tie in ½ lengthwise with right sides together. Stitch leaving a 3” open in the center of the seam for turning.
  • Open out the tie so the seam is centered. Press seam to one side.
  • Mark a diagonal line along each end of the tie. Stitch along the marked line and trim close to the stitching.
  • Turn right side out and press, slip stitch the opening closed. (Note: I personalized mine by embroidering with an initial.  If you choose to personalize yours similarly, be sure to do this before step 1 so that the back of the monogram is not showing.)
  • Tie around napkin.
